A single-vehicle crash on Old Stage Highway near the Rushmere Food Mart on March 14 resulted in the driver being airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with severe injuries.

According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred around 1:05 p.m. The driver, now identified as Montrel E. Holmes, 56, of Smithfield, was reportedly operating a 2016 Hyundai Accent when he lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road and struck a tree. Holmes was not wearing a seatbelt.

State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, and no charges have been filed at this time.
