Wilbur “Sonny” Dixon Joyner Jr., of Carrollton, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2021.

Born in Franklin, he was the son of the late Wilbur Dixon Joyner Sr. and Mary Emily Bradshaw. Sonny retired from Gwaltney Motor Company as a mechanic. He worked on cars for 40 years and was one of Isle of Wight’s finest mechanics. His mechanical skills reached much further than just vehicles. Sonny was well-known throughout town to be a fixer of all things with an engine, power button and everything in between. Legend has it, they’ve yet to find something Sonny Joyner couldn’t fix! When he wasn’t fixing something, he was fulfilling his other role as the town’s unofficial bread distributor or delivering bags of his famous nuts, a secret recipe he concocted with pecans and/or peanuts, bagged, and labeled appropriately, “Sonny’s Nuts.”

Sonny is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice Bryant Joyner; daughters, Natalie Erger, Kelly Mapp and Kristy Joyner; and grandchildren, Kyle (Megan), Dylan, Gage and Jade. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Emily Joyner Edwards.
