Brenda Lee Suggs, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on April 17, 2021, at age 69.
Brenda was born Nov. 8, 1951, in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Hampton High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Suggs, on Dec. 6, 1969. They ultimately designed and built their home in Carrollton, where they’ve resided for the past 15 years. They were happily and faithfully married for more than 50 years. She was a devout Christian woman who loved Jesus in her daily walk. Brenda enjoyed teaching Sunday school to children for many years at Peninsula Missionary Baptist Church.
Brenda worked for Avon Fashions in Newport News for more than 20 years. She founded Brenda’s Cleaning in 2000 where she touched countless families’ lives with cheerful service and friendship.
Brenda was a loving and nurturing influence on her entire family. Her kindness and warmth endeared to her son, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, who knew her as “mamaw.” She was happiest when in her kitchen cooking delicious Southern meals for her husband, family and anyone who sat at her table. She loved the holidays with her family that consisted of laughter and fellowship. After a bountiful harvest from her husband’s garden, she would can vegetables and fruits to share. She enjoyed communicating with her siblings and friends daily. She loved watching the birds feeding in her backyard, where she kept beautiful flowers and seasonal flags.
Brenda is survived by her loving husband, Ralph Edwin Suggs; her son, Bradford James Suggs; and her daughter, Megan Alyse Horne and husband, Scott Mason Horne. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Lahna Mae Horne and Shepard Page Horne, and her siblings, Linda Gail King, Joe Edwin Peed and Margaret Ann Stacey.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, James R. Peed and Alice Marie Levi Peed; brothers, Steven Jeffery Peed and Ronald James Peed; and nephew, Shamus Randsell Peed.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8 at Smithfield Baptist Church with Pastor Patrick Wood officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please consider making a donation to the American Heart Association in her memory. The family will not be receiving friends and family at their residence before or after the memorial service as they grieve and process this great loss.
