Last-minute changes to Windsor, Smithfield graduations

Published 10:01 am Thursday, June 10, 2021

Heavy rain forecasts June 10 and 11 are likely to make the football fields at Smithfield and Windsor high schools unusable for the graduations scheduled this week.

As such, school officials have notified parents of last-minute changes to each school’s commencement ceremony.

Windsor’s is still scheduled for June 11 but will now be held inside Liberty Live Church in the city of Hampton at 11 a.m. The church is located at 1021 Big Bethel Road, Hampton.

Smithfield’s ceremony is still scheduled for June 12 but will also now be held inside Liberty at 10 a.m. There will now be only one ceremony for the entire graduating class rather than the two separate ceremonies the school had planned in May to adhere to coronavirus-related restrictions on gatherings still in effect at the time.

Since Virginia has now lifted its mask mandate and all coronavirus-related capacity limits, masks will no longer be required for staff, students or guests and WHS seniors are now allowed up to eight guests. SHS’s guest limit per student remains at six.

Liberty will stream each school’s ceremony live and the link to the video will be posted on Isle of Wight County Schools’ Facebook page for the benefit of those unable to attend the ceremony or at higher risk from the virus. The link to Smithfield’s ceremony will also be posted to Smithfield High’s website.
