Churches collect necessities

Benn’s United Methodist Church hosted a collection of food, school supplies, hygiene kits, cleaning supplies and more on June 19.

The church was a collection site for its fellow United Methodist Churches in the VAUMC York River District, which also include Bethany, Oak Grove, Riverview, Trinity, Uzzell and Woodland United Methodist Churches.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief is a mission of the United Methodist Church. Each year at the annual VAUMC Conference, United Methodist churches send “Kits for Conference”: school kits, hygiene kits, and cleaning buckets. Canned and boxed food items were also collected. In the past, these things were then transported by Seaford Transport to a location in the United States to be used as needed around the world.

The VAUMC Annual Conference was virtual this year, so the “Cans and Kits” collection was handled a little differently. Local churches were encouraged to gather items as in the past but distribute them locally.

Items donated by these churches will benefit the Isle of Wight County Christian Outreach Program Food Pantry, Isle of Wight County Schools and the Genieve Shelter.
