Tonight’s return of Summer Concert Series canceled because of weather

The long-awaited return of the Summer Concert Series on the Times’ front lawn will have to wait a week.
Organizers, who’ve been watching the weather all day, decided midafternoon to cancel the performance by Smithfield’s Forte jazz band. Forecasters predict another round of rain close to the concert’s scheduled 7 p.m. start time.
Any decision on the town’s fireworks display in downtown Smithfield will be made closer to the event start time.
“The only thing that will cancel the display of fireworks is if we are dealing with thunderstorms at the time of the display,” the town posted on Facebook.
Here’s the schedule for the remainder of this year’s Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the Isle of Wight County Arts League:
- July 9 — Bobby Blackhat, blues vocalist, harmonica player and songwriter
- July 16 — Higher Ground, swing, Latin, jazz and modern big band sounds
- July 23 — Wmsburg Swing Band, keeping the Big Band tradition alive
- July 30 — Kim Persons and Lana Puckett, country songwriters and balladeers
- Aug. 6 — Sounds of Motown
- Aug. 13 — Fleet Forces Band Combo, featuring performers from the Navy’s Fleet Forces Band
- Aug. 20 — Nu Blu, Americana/mountain music from North Carolina
- Aug. 27 — Chris Campbell, puppeteer and singer
- Sept. 3 — Griffin Lane, a local favorite performing classic country
- Sept. 10 — 70 South, rock and blues
All performances will begin at 8 p.m. except for Campbell’s children-themed show, which will begin at 7.
