Chippokes to host Prelude to Yorktown

Take a step back in time to 1781 and experience how soldiers lived, fought and survived. In partnership with the 7th Virginia Militia, Chippokes Plantation State Park, 695 Chippokes Park Road, Surry, will bring history to life in a weekend full of historic reenactments Sept. 25-26.

Both days will feature a 45-minute battle reenactment at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Besides the skirmishes, visitors can enjoy a period-correct merchants’ market complete with food vendors and settler shops, tour the historic battlefield camps and watch artillery and cavalry demonstrations throughout the day.

Guests can also enjoy the historic grounds of the Jones-Stewart Mansion. Tours of the mansion and brick kitchen demonstrations will be offered throughout the weekend, courtesy of Chippokes Plantation State Park volunteers.
