An overturned propane truck in Isle of Wight County on Friday resulted in a fatality and a hazardous materials spill.

The incident happened in the 14000 block of Tylers Beach Road at 11:26 a.m., according to Virginia State Police.

A 2005 International 4400 truck with Southern States Propane was traveling on the road when the driver, Carlton B. Cherry, lost control, ran off the roadway, overcorrected and struck a tree before overturning, according to Virginia State Police.

Cherry, 63, of the 8000 block of Cut Thru Road, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and died on impact.

As a result of the crash, the vehicle began to leak propane gas, causing a hazmat spill.
