VDOT seeks public input on Route 17
Published 5:32 pm Tuesday, January 18, 2022
The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking feedback through an online survey, part of an Arterial Preservation Plan studying ways to enhance safety, preserve capacity and improve mobility on Route 17 in the City of Suffolk and Isle of Wight County, all without large-scale roadway widening. This is the second of three surveys created to gather feedback on recommendations to improve travel conditions on Route 17, with this survey focused specifically on the portion of Route 17 in the City of Suffolk, from College Drive to the Isle of Wight County line. Survey respondents will be asked to rate and prioritize proposed improvements to this corridor, and a separate survey will be conducted for the portion of Route 17 in Isle of Wight County in Spring 2022.
The purpose of the Arterial Preservation Plan is to preserve and enhance Route 17, a critical transportation highway accommodating the long-distance mobility of people and goods throughout the commonwealth. Ultimately, the study will propose improvements designed to mitigate safety issues, improve traffic operations and alleviate congestion.
Public involvement was first conducted in Fall 2020 with an online survey focused on gathering opinions on travel experiences between Isle of Wight County and the City of Suffolk. Responses were evaluated and informed the development of recommendations included as a part of this survey.
The survey is now open for participation and will remain open until Jan. 31, 2022, at tinyurl.com/Rt17survey.
Comments regarding the study can also be submitted in writing by contacting Mr. Jerry Pauley at 7511 Burbage Drive, Suffolk, VA 23435 or at jerry.pauley@vdot.virginia.gov. Please reference “Route 17 Arterial Preservation Plan Study.” Written comments will be accepted through Jan. 31.
