Club announces scholarships available

The scholarship program of the Carrollton Ruritan Club provides financial assistance for higher education after high school or equivalent. Funds for scholarships come from they club and its members, as well from the Ruritan National Foundation and the Carrollton Ruritan Education Fund within this Foundation.

Any graduating senior from Smithfield High School, Isle of Wight Academy, or comparable home schooling who will begin higher education in the summer and/or fall of 2022 is eligible to apply. A small preference will be given for residents of greater Carrollton (23314), including Rescue (23424) and Battery Park (23304). Students from other parts of Isle of Wight County will also be considered, as will students already enrolled and continuing college attendance.

The ranking criteria for judgment of scholarship awards includes:

  • Summary of career goals
  • Financial need, including recent income responsibility from part-time work,
  • Community and extracurricular school activities including leadership roles,

considering effects of Covid-19 on these activities in 2020 and 2021

  • Academic achievement and indicated ability to perform in higher education,
  • Character and related recommendations,
  • Some preference for residents of Carrollton area.

The Carrollton Ruritan Club and its Scholarship Committee selects the recipient. One or more scholarships are offered for amounts of $1,000 or more.

Applications include an up-to-date transcript of grades, preferably with SAT and/or ACT scores, and two reference letters.

The application deadline is March 18. The completed application and supporting

recommendations, grades, and most recent test scores must be received by March 18 at, or postmarked by March 16 to

PO Box 32, Carrollton, VA 23314. Applications by email are preferred. Late or incomplete information will disqualify the application.
