Shirley Anne Cordle Horton, 81, of Smithfield, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, at her residence.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry Cordle and Roberta Duggar Cordle. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Fred Thomas Horton; daughter, Kimberly H. Wells (Ashton); son, Scott H. Horton (Terri); grandchildren, Brittany, Laura, Dalton, Hunter, Savanna and Skylar; great-grandchildren, Bentley, Oliver and Ashton; sisters, Mary Munn (Frank) and Dreama Stimley (Jim); and a brother, Dennis Cordle (Cindy). She was also preceded in death by her sister, Norma Jean Silcox; brothers, Billy, Mackie and Sonny Cordle; and a great-grandson, Kaleb Hayes Gray.
Above all else, Shirley lived to serve her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Tommy Horton, for 61 years. She loved spending time with her entire family and raising her children. She also enjoyed many other activities such as reading, gardening and sewing. If there were any types of clothing you wanted, such as a dress, blanket or quilt, she could easily make it, along with beautiful bouquets of flowers and wreaths or any other types of crafts. She loved spending her time making things for people and seeing them smile. She had the most beautiful blue eyes and pearly white teeth that when she smiled, she would light up the room. She could name any and every type of flower, when and where to plant them and when they would bloom. Her love of books led her to volunteering at several local libraries, including downtown Smithfield and Bacon’s Castle. She held several other jobs along the way, but her favorite job of all was being the best Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and friend she could possibly be. She is truly loved by many and her light will never be outshined.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at Littles Funeral Home, Smithfield, with burial to follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Online condolences may be registered at www.littlesfuneralhome.com.
