Donald Lee Harris of Smithfield, Virginia passed away on July 10, 2022, at the age of 85. He was born on September 5, 1936, to James Kemper Harris III and Annetta Willard Harris. Don served in the Korean War. He retired from the Hampton Veterans Administration Hospital where he worked as a Steam Fitter and Plumber.  He was an Apprentice program graduate from Hampton Local 540 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.  Don was a member of Northampton Christian Church for over 50 years. His greatest love was his wife Carolyn and his family. He enjoyed hunting on the Spratley and Faison Farms and being a member of Bacon’s Castle Hunt Club. Don was an avid NASCAR fan. He restored many Ford vehicles including two coupe cars (1938, 1940), a 1951 pickup, 1966 Mustang, and a 1967 Fairlane. Don was always available to lend a helping hand and loved sharing his homegrown vegetables from his garden.

He is predeceased by his wife, Carolyn J. Harris, of 58 years and siblings James K. Harris IV, Charles “Pee Wee” Harris, John A. Harris and Robert T. Harris, Sarah Jones, Lola Wainwright, and Mary Dozier. He is survived by his daughter Holly Scarborough (Troy), son Lee Kemper Harris, grandchildren: Rhett Scarborough (Shannon), Logan Scarborough, Paige Harris, Ashlyn Gillespie (Connor) and great grandchildren: Vivianna, Jonah, Laine, Amrein Harris, Giuseppe Gillespie, brothers-in-law: Earl Harrison, S. Chris Jones; sister-in-law Karen Jones, and niece Kaitlin Hinchey (John) and many more loving family members. A private burial will be held with family and friends.
