Twenty-two artists collaborated on the Sunflower Field Project, an interpretation of an original photograph by Isle of Wight Arts League member Mike O’Shell as a mosaic of 6-inch squares. The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine.
Proceeds from the sale of the completed artwork will be donated by the Arts League to Mercy Chefs to provide aid to Ukrainian refugees. Each artist created a 6-inch-by-6-inch artwork in his or her favorite medium.
Some panels incorporate subtle symbols and motifs of Ukrainian culture within the design, such as the national flag of sky blue and sunflower yellow, embroidered designs like that which enliven traditional dress, pysanky eggs and wheat. Some panels have been done in traditional artists’ painting mediums of oil, acrylic, oil and wax pastels, watercolor and gouache. Other panels have been created using glass mosaic, bead embroidery, paper collage and cloth and thread.
The artwork is offered by silent auction to conclude at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 during the reception for the Isle of Wight Arts League Members Show. (Submitted photo)
