Little Theatre to entertain concert patrons

The Downtown Smithfield Summer Concert Series will have a dramatic flair this week.
The Smithfield Little Theatre will perform a variety show, “Broadway on Main,” at 7 p.m. on the gazebo stage in front of The Smithfield Times building on Main Street.
With selections from SLT performances over the years, the cast will honor June West Hurst, the lone surviving member of the original 1962 troupe that became Smithfield Little Theatre.
“June and her husband, Jim, who passed away in 2005, were driving forces in what SLT is today,” said board member Gary Parsons. “Our current building, arguably the finest community theater venue in Tidewater, wouldn’t be what it is without Jim’s vigilance during its construction and June’s input on what a theater space needs to offer. We have many members with fond memories of acting with, or being directed by, the two of them.”
The SLT Board of Directors is dedicating SLT’s 60th season, which begins in October, to Mrs. Hurst.
The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Isle of Wight Arts League, the Town of Smithfield, Smithfield-Isle of Wight Tourism and The Smithfield Times. The season concludes Friday, Sept. 2, with a performance by local favorites Griffin Lane.
