Carrollton water outage repaired but low pressure may persist

Low water pressure may persist in Carrollton for the next few hours, but the outage has been repaired, according to county officials.

The county announced via its IW Alert system just after 6 a.m. that its water system had gone out all across the Carrollton area. Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson described the issue as a “system problem” where “a couple valves weren’t operating properly.”

“The water is essentially fixed now,” Robertson told The Smithfield Times just after 9 a.m., noting that county staff was in the process of “flushing the system to make sure there’s no air in the lines.”

All areas checked thus far have reported appropriate water pressure levels, Robertson said. A few minutes before 10 a.m., the county sent out another IW Alert message notifying Carrollton residents that service had been restored.

Carrollton Elementary and Isle of Wight County Schools announced just after 8 a.m. that the division did not anticipate any interruption to school schedules as a result of the issue.

According to the alert, normal water pressure should return by the end of the day.
