Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Capt. Tommy Potter has graduated as a member of the 283rd session of the FBI National Academy.
The graduation occurred at the National Academy in Quantico on Sept. 13.
Potter is the fourth deputy in department history to complete the prestigious program, said Sheriff James R. Clarke Jr.
Nationally, fewer than 1 percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program.
The academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training. Participants must have proven records within their agencies to attend. On average, participants have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.
The 283rd session consisted of 235 officers from 49 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 21 countries, five military organizations and five federal and civilian agencies.
FBI Director Christopher Wray delivered remarks at the ceremony.
“I’m very pleased that Capt. Potter was chosen to attend and successfully completed the FBINA,” Clarke said. “This experience not only enhances Capt. Potter’s already keen leadership abilities, but his now worldwide network of law enforcement professionals will benefit our agency and Isle of Wight County.”
Potter was promoted to the rank of captain two years ago. Before that, he served in multiple capacities within the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, most recently commanding the Investigative Division. In his current role, he oversees all aspects of the department’s operational readiness and handles several other ancillary duties.
“The Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring that Isle of Wight County is a safe place to work, visit or raise a family,” Clarke said. “Strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies within the county and our surrounding jurisdictions allow us to fulfill this mandate. Partnerships among law enforcement agencies are a guiding principle of why the FBI National Academy was founded and continues today.”
