Smithfield Police investigating body found in vacant home

- Smithfield Police responded Oct. 29 to reports of a body being found in a vacant residence in the 200 block of West Street in the Jersey Park community.
The Smithfield Police Department is investigating the discovery of a body in a vacant home in the 200 block of West Street.
Officers responded Saturday, Oct. 29. According to Smithfield Police Chief Alonzo Howell, a group of citizens who had entered the home had called police upon discovering the body.
The department is awaiting a response from the medical examiner’s office on the cause of death, and has not yet made a positive identification of the body. Police are unsure how long the body had been in the house, Howell said.
