No Smithfield golf cart bill planned this year

Del. Emily Brewer, R-Isle of Wight, won’t be reviving a bill this year to allow golf carts on 35 mph roads in Smithfield.

According to Brewer’s campaign manager, Nathanael Hirt, the delegate has already reached the 15-bill cap for sponsoring proposed legislation.

Brewer had proposed the golf cart bill in 2022 and 2021. It would have allowed the town, by ordinance, to allow golf carts or utility vehicles on designated public highways where the speed limit is 35 mph or less – and cross any highway marked as a golf cart crossing by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

State law currently allows golf carts only on roads where the speed limit is 25 mph or less, and they aren’t allowed to cross a road where the limit is 35 mph or higher.
