One student allegedly stabbed another with a sharpened pencil Thursday morning, Feb. 9, at Georgie D. Tyler Middle School, causing an injury for which the student received medical attention.

Lynn B. Briggs, director of community and media relations for Isle of Wight County Schools, said the incident is being investigated by school administration.

The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office is looking into it as well.

“There was an incident at Georgie Tyler Middle School this morning that involved a pencil,” Briggs stated. “The tip of the pencil — the lead — became lodged below the student’s earlobe.”

Capt. Tommy Potter, spokesman for the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, shared a statement on the incident as well.

“This morning at Georgie D. Tyler Middle School, an altercation occurred between two students,” he stated. “The argument involved two students, and no other students or staff were involved.”

He noted that during that altercation, one student did strike another with a sharpened pencil, causing a stab injury.

Briggs said the two students were “immediately removed and separated” and an ambulance was called to attend to the injured student.

The school was placed on “modified lockdown,” where students are instructed to remain in their classrooms, to allow medical personnel unobstructed access, Briggs stated.

Potter indicated that the injured student was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“This incident is under investigation by the assigned school resource officer and school staff,” Potter stated, adding he anticipates a juvenile petition — or arrest warrant for a minor — would be issued.

If further information develops, the sheriff’s office noted that it will provide an update.

Briggs said, “As far as IWCS is concerned, this is a student disciplinary matter and will be addressed according to our policy.”
