Smithfield High School staff are working with law enforcement after confiscating a BB gun from a student.

According to a notice Principal Patricia Cuffee sent to parents, the incident occurred April 3.

The notice states a student in a cafeteria bathroom showed the gun to another student, who then told administrators. The student with the BB gun was “immediately removed” from the bathroom and the gun was confiscated.

Prior to going to the bathroom, the student had been in the same classroom all morning, the notice states.

In addition to working with law enforcement, the school is handling the incident “as a student discipline matter in accordance with division policy and procedure,” the notice states.

“I am very proud of the student who immediately notified administrators about the weapon,” Cuffee said. “We encourage our students to speak to an adult if they see or hear anything that may be a potential safety threat to our school community. Please know that the safety and security of our students is our No. 1 priority.”
