Letter – Advice for animal shelter

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

I enjoyed the full-page ad last week from the Gimme Shelter, to help adopt animals, to urge the public to find a pet at the Isle of Wight Animal Shelter. I understand the shelter is at full capacity. I appreciate all of the staff and volunteers, in their tremendous service to care and find homes for these animals.

I realize work staff needs a day off. I believe if the shelter would be open also Sunday, and be closed another weekday, it would benefit both animals and the public. I know when adopting a new pet, it usually is a family decision. More people could view the pets, when most folks are off on a Sunday. I would suggest just afternoon hours, when staff and family could still attend their place of worship in the morning.

I believe it would greatly help the present full-capacity situation. More animals could be viewed and would not have to be euthanized. The public would have more accessible hours to adopt a forever pet.

I ask the Sheriff’s Department to please have adoptable pet hours on Sunday.
