Weather got the best of Downtown Smithfield’s Summer Concert Series for the second week in a row.

With another cell of possibly severe weather headed toward Isle of Wight, organizers decided midafternoon Friday to cancel the 7 p.m. performance by the York River Concert Band on the Main Street Square stage in front of The Smithfield Times.

While radar shows the system possibly clearing out by showtime, performers in the full orchestra would have been traveling from the Peninsula and setting up in potentially hazardous conditions.

The concert series will resume next Friday, June 30, with a patriotic performance by the Tidewater Concert Band. The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Isle of Wight Arts League, Town of Smithfield and The Smithfield Times.
