Smithfield Town Council cancels July meeting, will hold Grange hearing in August

The Smithfield Town Council meeting scheduled for July 5 has been canceled.

The Town Council’s committee meetings are still on for July 24 at 3 p.m. The next regular scheduled Town Council meeting is Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in The Smithfield Center.

The Aug. 1 meeting, according to Town Manager Michael Stallings, will include a public hearing on the Grange at 10Main development proposed at Route 10 and Main Street. A final vote on the proposed 304-home mixed-use development may or may not occur that same night following the hearing, depending on the will of the Town Council members, he said.

Smithfield’s Planning Commission recommended approval of developer Joseph Luter IV’s requested rezoning and five of six requested permits, but split 4-3 in recommending the town not allow four-story apartment buildings.

The Planning Commission’s next meeting is scheduled for July 11 at 6:30 p.m. in The Smithfield Center.
