A Smithfield man accused of fraud is in custody after allegedly struggling with police outside the ABC store by Food Lion.

Alexander Insley, 27, has been charged with attempted fraud and numerous counts of assault on law enforcement.

According to Smithfield Police Lt. J. Eric Phillips, officers were called to the ABC store at approximately 10:25 a.m. on Aug. 17.

Phillips said police learned Insley had an outstanding warrant on file, and he began fighting when officers attempted to take him into custody. He was eventually subdued and taken to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail in Suffolk, where he’s being held without bond.
