Richard Allen Wells, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away tragically on August 19, 2023, as a result of an accident near his home in Isle of Wight County. He was 71 years old.

Richard was born on May 10, 1952, in Nansemond County, Virginia, to the late Mayo Buxton Wells Sr. He grew up in a loving hard-working family. He is survived by his brothers Diney Wells (Sue) and Mayo Buxton Wells Jr. (Cindy). He was preceded in death by his sister JoAnn Wells Epps and brother-in-law Joseph T. Epps. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Ray Luter (April), along with his six nieces and nephews.

Richard’s life was marked by his dedication and hard work. His journey at GTL Transport in Suffolk, VA, is where he served with unwavering commitment for twenty-six years. His dedication to his job was exemplary, and his impact was felt throughout the company. Even in his retirement, Richard continued his professional journey by contributing his skills and expertise to Isle of Wight County in their public works department.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard’s greatest joy was found in his family. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Joyner Wells Gordon. He was married to his loving wife, Dianne Luter Wells, for fifty years, a union that was a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Crystal Wells Taylor (Matthew Taylor) and Michael Brandon Wells. Richard’s legacy extended to his three cherished grandchildren, Logan Caylee Jones, Tristan Gauge Taylor, and Regan Harper Taylor, who brought him immense joy.

Richard’s warmth, generosity, and open-heartedness made him a friend to all. He had a unique ability to connect with people, and he never met a stranger. His reliability and willingness to lend a helping hand endeared him to those around him. He was known for his kindness and selflessness, always putting the needs of others before his own.

As we bid farewell to Richard Allen Wells, we remember a man who embodied the values of family, dedication, and friendship. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and the indelible impact he made on the lives of many.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel is serving the family.
