Roland Holladay Lewis

Roland Holladay Lewis passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 after a long illness.

He is predeceased by his father, John William Lewis, and his mother and step-father, Pearl Holladay Bunch and Harold Eugene Bunch, Sr., his first wife, Gloria Owen, and step-son, Gregory Ealy. 

Born February 20, 1938, Roland grew up on the Holladay Farm in Carrollton. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1958, then enlisted in the US Army, in which he proudly served our country. He was also a member of the US National Guard and the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department. In 1973, he married his wife of 50 years, Frances Kerman Lewis. They built their home and family on Brewers Creek, just steps away from the farm on land that once belonged to his great-grandparents.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Charles “Chuck” Newsome and Keith (Barbara) Newsome,  and daughters Robyn (Ron) Gowing and Christy (Robert) Archer. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Angelia Douglas and her daughter Christina. Roland also leaves behind six grandchildren –  Kimberly Burton, Tedra Dyar, Candace Cook, Alexis Newsome, Seth Archer, and Sarah Archer, and six great-grandchildren – David, McKenzie, Jacob, Deanna, Brandon, and Ashton. 

Roland was a member of the American Legion, Carrollton Ruritan Club, Smithfield Masonic Lodge #18, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 127, Scottish Rite, and the Model A Restorers Club. 

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on September 2 at St. Luke’s Cemetery in Smithfield, officiated by Pastor William McCarty, Sr. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department or Isle of Wight Academy.
