Weekend crash on Benn’s Church Boulevard kills Smithfield woman

A two-vehicle weekend crash on Benn’s Church Boulevard killed an 80-year-old Smithfield woman.

According to Virginia State Police, a northbound Chevrolet Suburban T-boned an Oldsmobile Bravado on the passenger side when the southbound Oldsmobile’s driver attempted to make a U-turn.

The crash caused both cars to run off the roadway, and life-threatening injuries to Betty Hendrick Bryant of the 20200 block of Cherry Grove Road, who later succumbed to her injuries at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.

The Oldsmobile’s driver, identified by police as Robert Bryant, allegedly failed to yield right-of-way but police haven’t yet announced any charges resulting from the crash, which remains under investigation.

Police were called to the scene at 10:45 a.m.. The Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department arrived five minutes later, at 10:50, where, according to responding firefighters, they found heavy damage and entrapped occupants.

Several bystanders, according to responding firefighters, assisted the entrapped occupants until emergency personnel arrived.

The driver of the Suburban, identified as Catrelle Auvil of Carrollton and a 7-year-old passenger, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported from the scene.
