Former Del. Lashrecse Aird, D-Petersburg, won the contested race for Virginia’s new 13th Senate District.

According to unofficial election results, Aird received just under 60% of more than 57,000 votes cast across the district, which spans from Richmond through Sussex County and includes Surry. Her Republican challenger, Eric Ditri, received 40% with the remainder going to write-in candidates.

Ditri carried Surry with 51% of the county’s just over 3,300 votes. Surry accounts for just over 3 ½% of the district’s voters.

All 40 state Senate seats and all 100 House of Delegates seats were on the ballot this year, and for the first time used legislative boundary maps approved by Virginia’s Supreme Court in 2021 based on the 2020 Census.

Neither Aird nor Ditri immediately responded to The Smithfield Times’ request for comments.

Aird, in June, defeated Sen. Joe Morrissey, D-Petersburg, in a primary election for the Democratic Party’s nomination.
