Butler tops IWA’s championship cross country race

Isle of Wight Academy junior John Butler was the school’s top finisher in Thursday’s Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Woodberry Forest.

Competing in division II, Butler finished the 3.1-mile-long course in 20:10.5, two spots ahead of team member and classmate Jayce Joyner, who clocked in at 20:17.67.

Yet another IWA junior Glenn Walters finished 95th at 23:06.77 and freshman Zachary Jackson finished in 23:23.33 to wrap up the Chargers’ boys finishers in the top 100. The boys squad finished 10th out of 16 teams at the meet.

In the girls race, IWA’s Alexandra Wilson finished 36th at a 25:17.67 clip. Jillian Foster finished 98th at 30:31.62.

IWA’s varsity football team closed out its 1-7 regular season with a 42-0 loss to Smith Mountain Lake.

The school’s fall sports teams will honor this year’s athletes at its annual Fall Sports Banquet Wednesday, Nov. 29.
