Virginia Department of Transportation contractor crews will next week begin work on the intersection of Routes 10 (Colonial Trail East) and 617 Bacons Castle Trail/White Marsh Road) in Surry County.

Howard Brothers Contractor Inc. was awarded the nearly $2 million contract, which will add left turn lanes from Route 10 onto Route 617 toward Bacons Castle and from Route 10 to Route 617 toward Wakefield. The work will also add a new right turn lane from Route 617 to Route 10 north toward Surry, shoulder improvements on all four quadrants of the intersection, and land clearing to increase sight distance for crossing traffic and the installation of updated traffic signage.

The placement of work zone signs is scheduled to begin as early as Nov. 27.

During construction, Howard Brothers plans to implement long-term shoulder closures on Route 10, temporary single-lane closures under flagger control and traffic shifts.

Access to all private property and businesses on Routes 10 and 617 will be maintained at all times, according to a VDOT news release. Drivers are to reduce speed when traveling through a work zone.

Construction is estimated to be complete by the fall of 2024.
