A common visitor to pine forest, the brown-headed nuthatch, photographed recently by Times reader Raymond Foster, forages for insects in the bark of trees.  Adroit flyers they can sometimes catch insects in the air.  Pairs regularly communicate and their high pitched piping notes often announce them before they can be seen.
