Courthouse Highway crash kills Newport News woman

A Newport News woman died in a two-vehicle Dec. 12 crash on Courthouse Highway.

The collision occurred at Courthouse Highway’s intersection with Foursquare Road, also known as Route 620, less than a mile southwest of Smithfield. Virginia State Police were called to the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Police say the driver of a 2006 Lincoln MKZ, identified as 63-year-old Yvonne Howell Higgs of Newport News, ran a stop sign while traveling east on Route 620 and collided with a 2015 Bay Disposal dump truck traveling south on Courthouse Highway, also known as Route 258.

The truck struck the Lincoln at the driver-side door. Higgs died at the scene of her injuries.

The driver of the truck, identified as Antonio Brown of Portsmouth, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police say there’s no indication alcohol or speed played a role in the crash.

The crash closed both lanes of Route 258 for roughly six hours. The road reopened just before 1 p.m.
