Area lawmakers appointed to state Senate, House committees

Committee assignments for lawmakers who represent Isle of Wight and Surry are in place as the 2024 Virginia General Assembly session gets underway.
Democrats come into the session with slim majorities in both legislative branches. The margin in the state Senate is 21 Democrats and 19 Republicans, while the House of Delegates is now 51 Democrats and 49 Republicans.
Sens. Lashrecse Aird, D-Petersburg, and Emily Brewer, R-Isle of Wight, will serve on several committees important to the region.
Brewer, a Republican representing District 17, which includes Isle of Wight, was selected to serve on three Senate committees: Courts of Justice, General Laws and Technology and Rehabilitation and Social Services.
Aird, representing District 13, which includes Surry County, will serve on five state Senate committees: Courts of Justice, Education and Health, General Laws and Technology, Local Government and Transportation.
In the House, Dels. Nadarius Clark, Otto Wachsmann and Kim Taylor combine for a total of 10 committee assignments.
Clark, D-Suffolk, representing District 84, will serve on four House committees: Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources; Communications, Technology and Innovation; Education; and Public Safety.
Taylor, R-Petersburg, from District 82, was named to three House committees: Communications, Technology and Innovation; Health and Human Services; and Public Safety.
Wachsmann, R-Stony Creek, representing District 83, holds seats on three House committees: Communications, Technology and Innovation; Counties, Cities and Towns; and Privileges and Elections.
The 2024 legislative session runs through March 9.
