Shannon places at VAF leadership contest

Representing the Isle of Wight County Fair, Keegan Shannon brought home honors from the Virginia Association of Fairs Youth Leadership Scholarship Contest.

Shannon placed eighth in the contest for ages 14-19 held Jan. 4-7, at theWilliamsburg Lodge in Williamsburg, according to a news release.

Contest applicants had a chance to earn a portion of more than $9,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education.

Prior to arrival, youth submitted with their application a letter of reference from their representing fair, resume and essay. 

On contest day, Jan. 6, participants gave a digital presentation on a pre-assigned topic and then participated in a rotation of three additional components — an interview, prepared speech and an extemporaneous speech. Contest placings were announced as follows: 

Recipients have until their 23rd birthday to claim their scholarships. Youth who do not win first place can compete again, until they reach age 19.
