Car strikes, kills Carrollton pedestrian and dog

A Carrollton woman and her dog were both killed Thursday morning after being hit by a car on Benns Church Boulevard near the four-lane divided highway’s intersection with Riddick Road, three miles outside Smithfield.

Virginia State Police have identified the deceased as 43-year-old Amber Gibson and a Labrador.

According to State Police 1st Sgt. Keith Whitley, Gibson was walking alongside the westbound lanes toward Smithfield when she stepped into the travel lane and was hit by a 2002 Toyota 4Runner that came up from behind her. She and the dog were killed instantly.

No charges have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation.

The fatal collision, which occurred at roughly 7:10 a.m., and State Police investigation shut down both westbound lanes for several hours. The highway reopened at approximately 11:15 a.m.
