County renews boil water notice for Days Point residents

Residents of Isle of Wight County’s Days Point community have been under a boil water notice for nearly a month.

A failure in the old well screen, which keeps rock fragments from entering the water supply, caused residents to lose water service for roughly a day during the last weekend in January. Though a new county-owned well was drilled and operational by Feb. 6, a boil water notice issued Jan. 28 remains in effect.

County-owned wells are required under state law to meet Virginia Department of Health criteria for disinfection, as measured by testing of the water. The new Days Point well has yet to receive passing results.

According to an email Uwe Weindel, the county’s new director of utility services, sent Days Point residents on Feb. 20, the well had been re-disinfected and cleaned.

“Samples have been taken and we are awaiting the lab results,” the email states. “This is usually a two day process.”
