Carrollton Elementary hosts ‘Giving Tree’

During the months of December and January, Carrollton Elementary School hosted “The Giving Tree,” a project of the Cardinals “Caring and Respecting Everyone” or Cardinal CARE Club.

Families were asked to donate new scarves, gloves and hats to place on the tree for students in need of cold weather gear. Students simply visit the tree and grab what they need, no questions asked.

The Cardinals CARE Club, available to second and third graders, promotes kindness throughout the school by creating events in which the entire school community can participate. Each year the third graders in the club sponsor The Giving Tree, and the second graders plan a project to show kindness to a community organization. This year, the second graders sponsored a toy and food drive for the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter.

“It gives students that need stuff what they need,” said club members Imani Stokes and Amaya Hopkins. “The Giving Tree helps keep our Cardinals warm in the winter,” added student Grace Dailey.

“This is the seventh year the club has sponsored the Giving Tree,” said club sponsor and school counselor Marie Berkeley. “Students helping students has become a part of our school culture.” Third grade Elias Jones added, “Everyone can embrace kindness.”
