IW, Surry under ‘red flag’ fire-prone weather warning March 20

The National Weather Service has issued a “red flag” warning for Isle of Wight and Surry counties, which will begin at 10 a.m. on March 20, and remain in effect through 8 p.m.

The warning means a combination of strong winds, warm temperatures and low relative humidity can increase the likelihood of extreme fire behavior.

According to the NWS, westward winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected with gusts of 25 to 35 mph. The dry and breezy conditions, with relative humidity as low as 20% to 25%, will allow fires to spread rapidly.

Virginia is already under a statewide burn ban, which prohibits open-air outdoor burning prior to 4 p.m. from Feb. 15 through April 30 if the fire is within 300 feet of woods or dry grass.
