The Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter is urgently seeking a foster home for a dog whose owner received last-minute military deployment orders.

“Blue Moon,” a 3-year-old Cane Corso, was surrendered on Feb. 26 with the understanding that the owner will take his dog back when his four- to six-month deployment ends.

“He just didn’t have another option,” said Animal Control Officer Courtney Heath.

Heath said Blue Moon is up to date on vaccinations and weighs 90 pounds.

“He’s a quiet dog for the most part,” said Karen Grigg, a shelter volunteer.

While Animal Control staff will, if necessary, continue housing Blue Moon at the county’s shelter at Poorhouse Road for the duration of the deployment, they’d prefer to find him a more suitable home, for his sake and theirs. According to Heath, the shelter currently has only one available kennel.

“It’s urgent to start moving dogs,” she said.
