Letter – Shame on Dick Grice

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

Last week, I had the opportunity to watch the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors meeting. I was encouraged when I saw that every seat was filled, and from what I understand, there were many in overflow.

Many of the speakers were there to voice their thoughts about the Tidewater Logistic Center.

The majority of the speakers, whether for or against, came with reasonable and viable input.

Toward the end of the comment section, former Supervisor Dick Grice took to the podium to speak.

Mr. Grice had valuable information, data and statistics. However, Mr. Grice also compared those who spoke against the build as a “small group pushing a special agenda, a handful” and even comparing them to “a few residents pushing DEI.” DEI, according to Mr. Grice, is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

What I saw was a group of homeowners taking the time to research, gather and speak to those who were elected to represent them, to protect what surely is their biggest investment, safe haven and perhaps legacy: their homes.

Accusing them of being anything but good citizens is shameful and discouraging.

At all times, our citizens should be encouraged and applauded for showing up, monitoring and standing up for what they believe and whom they voted for to represent them.

Mr. Grice could have made his stand in favor of the Tidewater Logistic Center without demeaning those who came in favor of it.

I encourage the citizens of Isle of Wight County to continue to speak out, write and email your Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to let them know how you stand on any project in the county.
