Heat forces cancelation of summer concert

Tonight’s Downtown Smithfield summer concert, which would have featured the Hannah Jai Band, has been canceled due to an excessive heat warning by the National Weather Service.
The weather service’s Wakefield office cited “dangerously hot conditions,” including heat index values of up to 110, in issuing the warning, which encourages people to stay in air-conditioned spaces until 8 p.m. today.
The free concert series, which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day on Friday evenings, will resume July 12 with a performance by Pasture #3, a group of musicians from the Mill Swamp Indian Horses rescue. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. on the Main Street Square stage in front of The Smithfield Times office.
