Route 17 study moves forward

Published 5:41 pm Tuesday, June 8, 2021

As part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety, improve mobility and reduce congestion on Route 17 between Brewers Neck Boulevard and the James River Bridge, the department is seeking additional public feedback for the next phase of the STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) Study along this corridor.

STARS Studies help identify safety and operational improvements with comprehensive, innovative transportation solutions that relieve congestion bottlenecks and solve critical traffic and safety challenges throughout the commonwealth.

This study is assessing potential safety and operational improvements for 2.37 miles of Carrollton Boulevard between Brewers Neck Boulevard and the James River Bridge. Specifically, the main concern in this study area is traffic congestion during morning and evening peak hours.

Some of these potential improvements include:

  • Improved traffic signal timing/operations;
  • Modification to intersection lane configurations;
  • Extension of turn lanes;
  • Widening Route 17 to three lanes in the southbound direction;
  • Access Management; and,
  • Innovative Intersections.

As a follow up to the first survey for this study in January 2020 to identify the needs of this corridor, VDOT has created a second online survey to solicit feedback on the potential solutions developed based on the needs and existing issues identified in the first survey. The survey will be available through July 5, and can be found online at http://metroquestsurvey.com/iw7m7a.

Comments regarding the study can also be submitted in writing to Mr. Jerry Pauley at 7511 Burbage Drive, Suffolk, VA 23435 or at jerry.pauley@vdot.virginia.gov. Please reference “Route 17 Carrollton Boulevard Corridor Study.” Written comments will be accepted through July 5.
