Smithfield has canceled Saturday morning’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities, citing a high chance it would literally rain on the town’s parade down Main Street.

The National Weather Service’s Wakefield station is predicting thunderstorms after 4 a.m. Saturday and a 70% chance of precipitation.

Smithfield’s and Isle of Wight County’s joint tourism department announced the cancelation on its Facebook page Friday afternoon, citing the forecast of inclement weather, which includes the possibility of snow later in the day.

The rain is predicted to continue through 4 p.m., then possibly change to snow showers, with the temperature plummeting from 62 to 33 degrees for the remainder of the day. Overnight into Sunday, temperatures are forecast to plummet even further to a low of 21 degrees with wind gusts as high as 33 mph. Snow accumulation of less than half an inch is possible.

The parade will not be rescheduled.
