Carol M. Goerger, 76, unexpectedly passed away June 11, 2022 of heart failure. She was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts to Mary and George Mastick on Christmas Day 1945. Her dad was deployed in Europe, so her mother took a taxi to the hospital in a snowstorm. She was raised in a military family and lived in several states and countries, including Germany and Italy. She often reflected fondly about living in Germany during her teen years.

She attended Rutgers University and Christopher Newport College and graduated with a degree in elementary education from Old Dominion College. She was an elementary school teacher. She was a member of Smithfield Trinity UMC for 53 years. She taught Sunday School for 30 years and held several positions in the church. Carol also worked in day care and tutored many students in the Smithfield area. She enjoyed gardening in her spare time.

Carol is survived by her husband, Jim Goerger of 53 years, their son, Nick (Anita); daughter, Michelle Goerger; sister, Connie Cumbia; brother, George Mastick and three grandchildren, Zachary Goerger, Josh Goerger and Seth Vaughn and one aunt, Agnes Helming along with numerous extended family members. Her parents and sister, Molly Hastings predeceased her. She was especially grateful for her special friends, Bill W. and Bob Smith.
