The Virginia Department of Transportation and Hampton Roads Connector Partners, the design-build contractor for the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion, are planning a virtual open house to update the public on the project and construction timelines.

The virtual-only meeting is set for 5 p.m. Jan. 28. The event is open to the public and may be accessed using free online meeting technology. VDOT and Hampton Roads Connector Partners officials will present a project overview, be available to answer questions and receive public comments.

To participate, register at HRBTexpansion.org/events. A confirmation email will be sent with instructions on how to connect to the virtual open house by computer (video and audio) or by phone (audio only).

VDOT said the event will be recorded and shared on the project website for those who can’t participate.

The HRBT, which carries Interstate 64 between Norfolk and Hampton, has long been a regional traffic bottleneck. The $3.8 billion expansion project will add twin, two-lane tunnels and widen the four lane segments of I-64 from the I-564 interchange in Norfolk to Settlers Landing Road in Hampton.

The current 3.5-mile bridge-tunnel has dual two-lane immersed-tube tunnels on artificial islands, with trestle bridges to shore. These tunnels opened in 1957 (current westbound lanes) and 1975 (eastbound lanes) and are approximately 7,500 feet long. Traffic on the four lanes exceeds 100,000 vehicles per day during peak summer traffic, VDOT said in a news release.
