DNA evidence found in a basketball shoe helped convict a Newport News man in the shooting death of 36-year-old Travis Newby.

Last week, Isle of Wight Circuit Court Judge Carl Eason Jr. found 26-year-old Shymeek Stanfield guilty of first degree murder, robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Stanfield shot and killed Newby outside his Jersey Park apartment on Dec. 19, 2012.

$2m more needed for school priorities

More staff and new buses top the list of budget priorities for the Isle of Wight School Board.

Preliminary estimates show those may increase the school division’s 2016 budget by $2.1 million.

The 2015 budget was $51.7 million.

However, Superintendent Dr. Katrise Perera said at a Friday School Board meeting that her staff will revisit those numbers.

Alvin Wilson given Hardy seat

The Isle of Wight County School Board appointed Alvin Wilson as the Hardy District representative.

Wilson, 69, interviewed for the position Friday afternoon in closed session.

After the closed session, the Board voted 4-0 to select Wilson

Chairman Kent Hildebrand said the Board received three applications and conducted three interviews.
