County residents packed the Board of Supervisors meeting room and hallways Thursday, a clear majority of them opposed to the controversial ISLE2040 plan, which aims to add high-density housing to the county's northeast corner.

Like they are said to do in Washington, the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors kicked the can down the road on an ISLE2040 decision by at least two months. 

After a lengthy public hearing in a packed board room Thursday, the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to send the plan back to staff to for a "tweak" and to get more input from residents.

School sprinkler system trash after only 23 years in building

The faulty fire sprinkler system at Carrollton Elementary School is beyond repair, say school officials.

Last week, the system leaked water into a third grade classroom and a computer lab full of 25 new iMac Pros, destroying one.

“It’s been down every hallway,” said Principal Kevin Goetz, counting about eight leaks so far this school year.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Isle of Wight Social Services in not leaving the county.

“Social Services is not going anywhere,” said Isle of Wight County spokesman Don Robertson. What may be leaving the county is the Section 8 administrative office housed in the Social Services building.

Isle of Wight is currently appealing to the Virginia Housing Development Authority to have county vouchers administered in Suffolk and Franklin.
