Heavy rains keep beating the odds

Smithfield has sustained two “500-year” rainfalls in just eight years.

Starting Monday, Sept. 8 at 7 a.m., Smithfield recorded 12.21 inches of rain for a 24-hour period, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

In October 2006, a northeaster dumped as much as 18 inches of rain on Smithfield in one day.
