Surry doesn’t need tax hike

Editor, The Smithfield Times:
The Surry Board of Supervisors continued to work on the 2022-23 budget in a June 6 workshop. The Bacon’s Castle and the Spring Grove District Board Members held strong together with their conviction that the best thing for Surry is to raise taxes.
Even after numerous calls from citizens and opposition from the Surry and Dendron District board members to a tax increase, the Bacon’s Castle and Spring Grove members are sure they know what is best for our county – an unjustified tax increase. Even though all essential emergency services and the school budget can be fully funded within a budget at a lower tax rate and the recent real estate appraisals of all properties in Surry resulted in a 6% increase in tax revenue, the Bacon’s Castle and Spring Grove Board members still insist that raising taxes in addition to the 6% increase is needed.
Surry citizens, don’t allow the Bacon’s Castle and Spring Grove Board members to shackle us with unjustified tax increases. Let your voices be heard. Contact these board members by email, phone or any means possible to call for an affordable budget with a lower tax rate.
