Robert Charles Hannon

On Dec. 14, 2021, Robert “Bob” Charles Hannon was welcomed into Heaven as a good and faithful servant of the Lord. Surrounded by family and close friends, he passed peacefully in his home in Smithfield. Born in Hartford, Conn., Oct. 17, 1941, from the late Edgar and Alice Hannon, he was the third of four children. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy, serving over 22 years. Retiring as a chief warrant officer in 1982, he then joined Newport News Shipbuilding and retired after 21 years of service. Bob was a loyal servant and life member of the American Legion, holding both state and national positions, most notably the Virginia State Commander 2003-2004. Bob continued to serve his community in many ways. A staple patron of many Smithfield establishments, Bob touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Alice Hannon; sister, Marianne Burr; brother, John Hannon and William Cordle. Left to cherish his memory are his God-given family, daughter, Peg Cordle; grandson, Bobby Cordle; granddaughter, Kathryn Wright (John Paul); grandson, Bryan Cordle (Lauren); great-grandchildren, JP and Regan; sister, Eileen Hannon; special nieces, Jennifer and Sharon; and many other close friends.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 8, 2022, at American Legion Post 49, 818 S. Church St., Smithfield, VA 23430. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, Bob requested contributions to be made to American Legion Post 49, PO Box 601, Smithfield, VA 23431. His final resting place will be Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
